    Hey Guys,

Just wanted to thank you for recording this commentary. I haven’t listened to it yet since I’m at work, but I’m sure it will be the usually funny and insightful dialog that you always seem to have.

Can I suggest a Shaun of the Dead, Crank or (insert name of modern comic book based movie here) for the next commentary?

Great track guys, just finished listening while watching along with the movie. Hopefully the next time you can all get together for another one of these it can be for Spider-Man 3. Nothing would be more fun than hearing you guys rip that one apart.

I was surprised to hear as much critism being directed toward this movie, given the somewhat overhyping of this movie as being the greatest summer popcorn flick of all time, I’m convinced the love for this movie is fueled mostly by special effects and nostalgia, and as time goes by, some of that wears off.

One question I would have for John, Doug, and Darren, would be if they ever saw any of the recent anime Transformer cartoons, or if you were only familiar with the original G1 Transformers from the 80’s?

  • 8. John replies at 19th November 2007, 3:55 pm :

    Hey Monty,

Nope, the Tranformers movie is just as awesome on the 9th screening for me as it was on the first. I love it.

HOWEVER… I’ve always said there should have been less humans in the film. That’s never changed, and just because I love the the movie doesn’t mean I should be honest with what I thought the weaknesses were.

Yes… seen some of the more recent Transformers incarnations… they suck (IMHO)

    Hey John,Darren

The cop in the police station played George Lutz in HBO’s Band of Brothers and was also one of the gangsters in the beginning of Sin City that Bruce Willis clobbers with a (lead pipe?) by the convertible outside the warehouse, where the Yellow Bastard was with young Nancy.

    Hey John,

Me again….In the Michael Bay commentary, Bay states that in post production they accidentally put “Devastator” in the captions/subtitles which makes sense because in the credits it lists Brawl ;)

And at the end of the movie, Barricade, and and Frenzy and Scorponok are unaccounted for, and Starscream’s blasting off into space. They seemingly were forgotten about, hopefully for the sequel.

It is made clear through Optimus’ speech, that destroying a transformer’s spark kills them, which is made clear in the various cartoon incarnations as well. If this holds true, then Jazz, Blackout and Bonecrusher are still alive.

    Hey John,

I will agree with you on the point that the movie should have had less humans, even though with a 150 million dollar budget you were only going to get about 20-30 minutes of actual Transformer action, it just felt that all the unnessary human subplots were added to push the runtime over the 2 hour mark or to convince the masses this wasn’t just movie about an 80’s toyline.

I could have looked past this if the human characters were either interesting or marginally important to the plot, but they were not, over an hour and a half worth of some of the most cliche, cookie cutter, and simply way over the top characters I’ve seen in major movie all year, and unfortunately Sam’s parents, the “Dirty Harry” cop, and Agent Simmons all head the list.

Throw in all the leaps of logic put in to keep the plot moving, chessy dialog, and wussiefied Decepticons(more Decepticons were taken out by the humans then the Autobots), all this was just too much for this humble Transformer fan to bear.

I will say I found the scene with Prime eulogizing Jazz while carrying his remains like an old pair of luggage, and Iron Hide striking his “Buzz Lightyear” pose, to be hilarious, even though it wasn’t meant to be.

Downloading the commentary as type, looks like I’ll have to purchase the R1 copy now, R2 in the UK not out until 3 December.

  • 14. AjaxLou replies at 20th November 2007, 8:12 am :

Yeah the next movie should be interesting from a writing and costing perspective. Expectations will be to have more robots and less humans. Make that a lot more robots.

The problem is the more robots the more the budget goes up. At a certain point the studio is going to have to weigh cost against return.

Very similar to Spidey 1 & 2. Spidey 1 was modest in budget compared to S2 and the number of scenes with full out Spidey action in S1 are quite a bit less than S2. S2 had way more Spidey action but as a the result the budget began to ballon. And then you get the budget for S3! What is Sony prepared to shell out for S4? I imagine they will scale it back big time.

I downloaded this and will be listening to it at work next week. Can’t wait to hear it, hopefully it’s as entertaining as the Raiders commentary was.

guys great commentary, really enjoyable. I really hope ya can do more of these because they really are an enjoyable addition to the film due to the fact there not sanctioned by the film company so you can say whatever the hell you want about the film, good or bad. Id love if ya could do one on star trek 2 or terminator 2 because this would have great potential to get a good commentary going.

I’m with Darren about watching the Autobots Descend sequence more than the actual movie:) I’m not even into the TF cartoon, but when I saw that sequence in IMAX, dammit I cried a bit.

And I’m with Doug about Frenzy sucking and the hackers being a waste of damn time.

    Hi John

Just listened to the Indiana Jones commentary and am about to listen to this one. I loved everyone’s comments. Have you done more commentaries than the ones listed on the front page?

On the Conan post you mentioned doing “Princess Bride” but I couldn’t find any more commentaries on the blog.
