He is the best director of our generation, and it’s only fitting that Steven Spielberg will be the first director to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards. And who on earth is going to argue with this seletion?
Jaws
Empire Of The Sun
Munich
War of the Worlds
Catch Me If You Can
Minority Report
Artificial Intelligence: AI
Saving Private Ryan
Amistad (I personally think this was his best)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park
Schindler’s List
Jurassic Park
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
As a director, Spieberg has given us some of the most iconic, legendary and enduring films of all time. He has shown diversity and an ability to make films that resonate with wide ranging audiences spanning multiple generations. He’s the best of the best, and much deserving of this award. We at TMB salute you.

As well as he and is movies are known, I only own 2 of his movies on DVD (Jaws & Minority Report).
Speilberg is well deserved of the award, even though I prefer Scorsese as a director.
The positive thing about Speilberg is that he has tackled various genres. This is where Scorceses trails in his resume.
i cant get over the fact of how amazing he is
all the directors that gave scorseses his first oscar are amazing
its incredible
As much as I love Spielberg, I think Scorsese’s the greatest director of our generation. However you can’t disagree that Spielberg desevers some reconztion. Movies like Jaws, Schindler’s List, Saving Pravite Ryan and E.T are movies that are looked at as classics. Overall, Im glad to see Spielberg be the first director to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award, but would have been much happier to see the award get handed over to Scoreses.
Noooooo. The ending is great. David’s journey is complete. It’s so sad.
I loved A.I. until the end…I felt like 2 hours of my life had just been wasted for nothing.
I loved A.I.
I think A.I. is a masterpiece.
I agree with nbakid.
In my opinion War of the Worlds was absolute crap. Whoever named THAT should be shot in the face.
If anyone deserves this, its Steven Spielberg.
Easy there Chisox,
A LOT of people thought AI was terrible. It’s cool to disagree though.
The person who said AI is terrible should be shot in the face.
You forgot Hook. Enough said. And if anyone wants to fight bring it on.
Scorsese is easily a better director than Spielberg. Spielberg has more commercial appeal, yeah, but he’s made some bombs, whereas Scorsese is yet to mess up in my book (you could argue against New York, New York, but that’s it). Nonetheless Spielberg does deserve the award, I’ll give you that.
Spielberg had a big influence on me as a kid, before I had the balls to see Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick’s film (okay, 2001 was surreal as a kid).
Anyways, glad to see him get the award. I’ll bet Spielberg is ready to punch out some bitch that tries to steal that award. Poor guy hasn’t been in a good mood with thieves and spoilers. Facts of live: Piss off Spielberg, consider the rest of your life f**ked!
Hey Andrew,
I personally don’t really like Saving Private Ryan. But there’s no denying it’s massively critically praised.
I don’t HATE the movie. As a matter of fact there are a couple of things about it that I think are genius… but for the most part I personally think it’s highly over-rated.
I read a post of Top 10 Movies the Critics Loved But You Hated, and Saving Private Ryan was on that list, John.
I think the Golden Globes are full of shit…the Academy Awards aren’t that far behind.
Its more about giving the award to who is popular or who lost last year but we need to make up for it this year and give it to them and shit.
I’m still bitter over the fact that Gustavo Santaolalla has won two Oscars which he did not deserve!!!
John Williams should have won his Sixth Oscar for Memoris of a Geisha and Javier Navarrete should have won for Pan’s Labrynth.
At least Williams won a Golden Globe for
Memoirs of a Geisha….I still don’t like the Golden Globes.
Oh, and I love how the folks at the Golden Globes shamelessly pander, even waaaay moreso than the Academy.
I think the foundation of The Globes was, we’ll give you lots of awards mr. and mrs. uber-celebrity and a free meal and plenty of free booze, if you just show up and legitimize our vague and useless organization (The Hollywood Foreign Press…)
Er. No Love for 1941 or Duel? (I can see on the former though…overblown to say the least…)
Consider him saluted; but no love for Hook?
Actually, i can understand that but i still think it’s better than the lost world.
Funny how every list leaves off “Always.” Not one one his finest moments in otherwise great filmmaking.
Amistad was an amazing movie… I’m always recommending it to friends. In the last decade he’s put out some stuff that I haven’t really loved but he’s built up enough credibility with me that I’ll give everything he does a chance.
I would argue Artificial Intelligence. Hated that movie. Dragged on forever.
Where did I say I hated SPR?
I could argue War of the Worlds. And I thought you hated Saving Private Ryan, John?
The FUCK took them so long?!
