The Dark Knight Rises contains over an hour of IMAX footage

— Posted by Anthony

Now this is some interesting news for nerds like Elliot as word is spreading that out of all the summer blockbusters being released this year that Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knigh Rises” will stand out as using over 60 minutes of original IMAX footage from genuine IMAX cameras rather than post converted stuff.

When Mr. Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” opens July 20, it will contain the most IMAX footage ever for a Hollywood feature, more than one hour’s worth. There were 40 minutes of such footage in 2008′s “The Dark Knight”—which set box-office records in its opening weekend. IMAX’s summer slate also includes potential blockbusters “The Avengers,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Men in Black 3,” Tim Burton’s gothic comedy “Dark Shadows,” and Ridley Scott’s 3-D “Prometheus.” Mr. Nolan’s film was the only one shot using IMAX cameras; the others were converted using IMAX’s technology.

The amount of footage within The Dark Knight that used genuine IMAX footage was inescapably noticeable when viewing the movie at home bluray and even moreso in the actual theater. The images and shots prohibited my eyes from blinking for minutes at a time due to me turning my head and ingesting all of the super high definition imagery. The fact that over 60 minutes will be presented this way has piqued my interest in not only the quality of the picture but also the length of the film! Shooting that much IMAX is not completely practical so I wonder how long this film will be if a presumed small portion is filmed using IMAX tech.
